As the MLS season kicks off, it was expected that it would be a very good year for Canadian soccer. Toronto FC, of course, lost on penalties to the Seattle Sounders in the MLS Cup Final after a scoreless game. The Montreal Impact lost to Toronto after extra time in the second leg of the semi-finals. Meanwhile, the Vancouver Whitecaps did not manage to make the playoffs, but have a bright future with some good young talent, such as Alphonso Davies.
These three teams were looking to get a great start to the season this past weekend, but surprisingly, none of these teams managed to get a win. Toronto had a 0-0 draw against Real Salt Lake, Montreal lost 1-0 to San Jose, and Vancouver also had a 0-0 draw against Philadelphia.
Toronto had a very good chance at winning their game against Real Salt Lake, but they were unable to take advantage of the numerous chances that they had, including a penalty that Giovinco missed late in the match.
Montreal played quite a different match than Toronto. They were very sloppy in their play and gave San Jose far too many opportunities to score. In all honesty, they were lucky that they only lost by one goal in this game.
The Whitecaps had many chances to take the lead in their game against Philadelphia. They passed up far too many good chances in this game to get the victory and are probably going to be angry at themselves for not getting those extra two points early in the year.
It is pretty much impossible to evaluate how well a team is going to do throughout the entire season by just looking at their first game of the year, but I am going to do it anyway.
Despite the draw, I believe that Toronto will, once again, be up towards the top of the standings. They have the same core players in place as they did last year and they were, of course, very successful. They obviously have a very strong offense and I cannot imagine that they will continue to miss their opportunities.
I could see Montreal not making the playoffs this year. Their star player, Didier Drogba, no longer plays for the team, and that will hurt them offensively. They also did not look too strong defensively in their match with San Jose.
Vancouver will have a bounce-back year. They looked good in their first game and they ended off last season relatively well. They are still extremely young and are not under any pressure to perform this year, but I believe that they have what it takes to be competitors this season.
Of course, like I said, it is impossible to determine their final positions based off of one regular season game, but it can show what the team might be like. Nevertheless, all three Canadian teams will be looking to get in the win column in their next games.
